The Knox County Regional Airport is inviting the public to celebrate a major milestone in the airport’s continued growth during a community open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 27.
The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature the official dedication of the new Becker Mining Systems Aviation Education Center, a 10,000-square-foot facility designed to support aviation, education, and community engagement throughout Knox County.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. and will include remarks from several local and state leaders, including State Senator Andrew Brenner, State Representatives Mark Hiner and Beth Lear, and Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr.
Airport officials say the new facility represents a significant investment in the future of aviation in Knox County. The center will serve multiple purposes, including housing and de-icing aircraft, providing a permanent home for the growing Civil Air Patrol unit, and offering meeting space for organizations such as 4-H, FFA, Ohio State University Extension programs, and other community groups.
“The airport’s hangars are full, while aviation activity continues to grow with an extended runway and refurbished terminal,” said Airport Authority Board Member and Event Co-Chair Mark Fritz. “Whether you’re an aviation enthusiast, curious about flight, or simply looking for a great family afternoon, this is your chance to see what’s happening at the Knox County Airport and why it matters to the future of our community.”
The open house will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including static aircraft displays, plane rides, flight simulator experiences, touch-a-truck exhibits, food trucks, giveaways from local businesses, and a ceremonial flyover during the dedication program.
Free parking will be available, and volunteers will assist with traffic throughout the day.
Airport officials say the Knox County Regional Airport continues to play an increasingly important role in the region’s economic development and transportation network. The airport currently experiences approximately 50 aircraft takeoffs and landings each day and maintains fully occupied hangars with a waiting list for additional space.
Leaders hope the open house will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about one of Knox County’s most valuable community assets while celebrating the airport’s continued growth and future potential.
