Zavaleta earns NCAC weekly award

CLEVELAND — Picking up right where he left off last season, Kenyon College junior Israel Zavaleta posted a couple of event wins this past weekend and Monday was declared the North Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week.

After wrapping up last season with national titles on both the one- and three-meter diving boards, Zavaleta and the Owls got the new 2022-23 season started Friday and Saturday. Zavaleta, as well as a few other divers, went to Ohio University to compete in the Fletch College Invitational.

On Friday, Zavaleta posted a score of 314.80 on the one-meter board and finished atop a field of a dozen divers. Saturday, he racked up a score of 388.10 to finish first and to set a new Ohio University pool record, which was previously established at 361.42 by Ohio’s Tim O’Brien in the 1986 season.

The conference’s Athlete of the Week award is the first for Zavaleta this season, but the third in his Kenyon career.
