Softball Takes Two from Lancers

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (23-16, 16-14 CL) hosted the Grace College Lancers (7-32-1, 3-29-1 CL) at the Cougar Softball Field on Tuesday, April 22.

Game 1 Summary:

MVNU used a big, 10-run second inning to propel it to victory in game one of the doubleheader by a final score of 14-2 in five innings of play. On the day, MVNU collected 14 total hits. Sydney Hoover finished the game 3-3 at the plate with an RBI, and Zhari Hill was 3-3 with four runs batted in. Avery Miller finished 2-2 with two RBI for the Lady Cougars.

Nadia Hoffman came away with the win in the circle for MVNU. Hoffman pitched five innings and allowed just five hits and two earned runs. She had seven strikeouts in the win.

Game 2 Summary:

Runs were a little harder to come by for the Lady Cougars in the second game of the day, but the team still came away with a 3-2 victory to secure the sweep. MVNU broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth after Jesenia Montalvo hit a sac-fly that scored Camden Laymon. Grace responded in the top of the sixth, blasting a two-run homer to left field to take a 2-1 lead over the hosts. In the bottom of the inning, MVNU tied the game with another Montalvo sac-fly, this time bringing home Kiera Mayer. The lead was then recaptured for good for MVNU after Hill hit a single that scored Hoover.

Hoffman secured the save for MVNU in the bottom of the seventh. Maddelyn Wine got the start and the win in game two, and allowed six hits and two earned runs through six innings. Wine had six strikeouts.

What’s Next:

MVNU hosts Bethel University on Wednesday, April 23, at the Cougar Softball Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 3:00 p.m.
