Softball Secures Sweep at Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla. —  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (3-2) played a doubleheader at Warner University (3-7) on Monday, March 3.

Game 1 Summary:

MVNU started the first game of the series strong, scoring twice in the top of the first thanks to a Kiera Mayer two-run homer. Warner scratched off a run in the third, but MVNU responded with a huge fourth inning by pushing across five runs to take a 7-1 lead. Skylar Zimmerman started the big inning with an RBI single that scored Brooklyn Krum. Kylie Rohr then scored off an Avery Miller RBI single to center. Bailey Sheets then smashed a two-run single to extend MVNU’s lead. The Lady Cougars would go on to win by a final score of 7-2.

Maddelyn Wine got the win in the circle for MVNU. Wine pitched a complete game and gave up two runs (one earned) and four hits. Wine had one strikeout in the victory.

Game 2 Summary:

The first inning started with MVNU scoring two runs. Miller hit an RBI double to left, scoring Rohr. Miller would later score in the inning from third after a wild pitch. Warner didn’t back down and responded with two runs of its own to tie the game at 2-2. MVNU reclaimed the lead in the top of the third after Mollie Pentz brought home Mayer with an RBI single. The Lady Cougars tacked on another run in the fourth as Miller hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Rohr.

Warner added a run in the sixth, cutting MVNU’s lead to one, but could not bring across the game tying run. The Lady Cougars took game two by a final of 4-3. Dakota Staffan got the start and the win in the circle. The sophomore pitched four innings, allowing three hits and two runs while also striking out two. Wine picked up the save for MVNU.

What’s Next:

MVNU plays the University of Michigan Dearborn at 12:15 p.m., followed by Cornerstone at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4.
