Softball Secures Doubleheader Sweep Against Grace

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio– The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (18-16, 11-11) played in a conference doubleheader against Grace College (12-22, 8-18) at Cougar Softball Field on Monday, April 15.


In the first game, MVNU took a 2-0 lead thanks to Zhari Hill’s two-run RBI single. However, Grace managed to even the score at 2-2 in the top of the third inning. MVNU quickly responded in the bottom of the third when Kiera Mayer hit a home run, putting them back in the lead at 3-2. Grace again tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning. The momentum shifted in MVNU’s favor in the bottom of the fifth inning when Brooklyn Krum delivered a two-run RBI single, pushing MVNU ahead 5-3. Sheridan Sullivan entered the game as a reliever, showcasing an impressive performance with five strikeouts while allowing only one run on six hits. MVNU secured the victory with a final score of 5-3.


In the second game of the doubleheader, Grace took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. MVNU responded with a sac-fly RBI from Mayer to bring the score 1-2. Grace then added three runs across the top of the second and third innings to get its lead to 5-1. MVNU’s offense caught fire in the bottom of the fifth inning with Mayer reaching first base on an error by the left fielder, driving in Laine Sparks to bring the score to 2-5. Hill hit a single to right field, bringing in Mollie Pentz. Krum’s single to right field allowed Mayer to score, narrowing the lead to 4-5.  Mackenzie Hancock reached first base due to an error by the pitcher, allowing Hill to cross home plate to tie the game. Now with momentum, Kylie Rohr doubled to center field for MVNU, bringing in Krum to claim a 6-5 lead. MVNU had two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning from Mayer’s RBI single and Avery Miller’s RBI single to go up 8-5. Grace scored one more run, but in the end, MVNU won by a final score of 8-6.

What’s Next:

MVNU softball will face off against the University of Saint Francis in a road conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16. The first game starts at 3:00pm in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
