Softball Extends Winning Streak to Six with Sweep of USF

FORT WAYNE, Ind.– The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball squad (20-16, 13-11)  faced off against the University of Saint Francis (17-22, 10-16) in a conference doubleheader clash held at Westendorf Field on Tuesday, April 16.


In the first game, in the top of the third inning, a Mallory Holcomb groundout to second scored Mackenzie Hancock for a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Brooklyn Krum reached first base due to an error at second, allowing Avery Miller to score, extending the lead to 2-0. Kylie Rohr’s double to left center brought home Krum and Zhari Hill, pushing the lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Saint Francis had a home run that brought the score to 4-1. USF added one more to cut into MVNU’s lead in the sixth. Maddelyn Wine shut the door on any USF comeback as she got the save in the 4-2 win. Sheridan Sullivan pitched 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. She allowed three hits and two runs.


In the second game of the doubleheader, a Mollie Pentz double to left center in the first drove in Holcomb, giving MVNU an early 1-0 lead. Miller singled up the middle and brought home Pentz, extending MVNU’s lead to 2-0. In the top of the second inning, Kiera Mayer’s single up the middle resulted in two RBIs as Holcomb scored and Hancock also crossed the plate, pushing the score to 4-0 in favor of MVNU. In the top of the third inning, Hill scored on a wild pitch, increasing MVNU’s lead to 5-0. In the top of the fourth inning, Mayer grounded out to second base, allowing Rohr to score. Miller then batted in Holcomb to widen MVNU’s lead to 7-0. Hancock’s double to left center resulted in three RBIs as Krum, Hill, and Pentz all scored, extending MVNU’s lead to 10-0 in the fourth. USF scored a run in the bottom of the inning to get on the board, but could not avoid the run rule. Wine got the win in the circle, pitching 5.0 innings and only allowing one hit and one run.

What’s Next:

MVNU’s softball team is set to battle with Goshen College in a conference doubleheader on Friday, April 19. The first pitch will be at 3:00 pm in Goshen, Indiana.
