Sipes scores 32 as Freddies run away from Redbirds in the second half

The Fredericktown Freddies boys basketball team picked up their 11th consecutive win Tuesday Night as they knocked off Loudonville at home 88-66 to improve to 11-2 and 9-0 in the KMAC.

The Freddies opened the game on an 8-0 run on threes by Tanner Estep and Carson Rinehart before Blake Sipes scored his first points. Brayson Youngen got the Redbirds on the board, Brady Gessner hit one of two free throws before Youngen hit a three to close the gap to two. Sipes scored again and Elliott Strouse answered for the Redbirds to make it 10-8 Freddies. Sipes hit one of two threes and Rhinehart and Dilan Wade traded threes before Rinehart scored again and the KMAC’s leading scorer Judah Layton got his first points and the Freddies led 16-13. Sipes hit 1/2 free throws and Brode Davis drilled both his free throws and Sipes got back to back buckets to end the quarter with the Freddies leading 23-13.

The Redbirds Dilan Wade got hot in the second quarter scoring 8 of the first 10 points of the period to help the Redbirds trail just 25-21. Judah Layton then scored 5 straight to give the Redbirds a 26-25 lead. Sipes hit a free throws and scored a bucket to give the Freddies a 2 point lead but Layton tied it right back up before an Estep 3 made it 31-28 Freddies. Gessner got a score with 210 left in the half to close the gap to one before Rinehart scored for the Freddies again but Layton got an and one to tie the game at 33 with with 128 left in the half. Rinehart got a tie breaking shot to go and Sipes scored 4 straight to give the Freddies a 39-33 lead. Strouse hit 1/2 free throws and the Freddies led 39-34 at half.

In the third quarter Davis got a quick steal and lay in for the Freddies to increase their lead to 7 which then ballooned to 14 with back to back scores by Gavin Toombs and a Sipes and one with 609 left in the quarter. 6’6 Jakub Poole closed the gap to 12 for the Redbirds but Toombs answered with a 3 before Layton hit a pair of free throws. Estep hit a three for the Freddies and Sipes got a two along with a pair of Toombs free throws to lead 58-38. Layton to scored 5 straight before Toombs got a shot to got to up the lead to 60-43. Wade and Toombs traded buckets before Sipes and Estep ended the quarter scoring the last 7 points (4 for Sipes and a three by Estep) and the Freddies led 69-45 after 3.

Toombs started the 4th a with a score before Layton hit 1/2 free throws and Wade got a 2. Sipes scored 4 straight and Davis and Rinehart were part of an 8-0 Freddies run to up the lead to 79-48 with 612 to go. At that point the benches came in to finish off the game and Loudonville hit a three at the buzzer. Freddies won 88-66.

Sipes had 32 to lead all scorers. Rinehart had 14 and Toombs added 15 points. (All unofficial stats)

Layton, who picked up 3 first half fouls finished with 20 points, just shy of his season average.
