Owls map out plans for Italy excursion

GAMBIER, Ohio — The Kenyon College football program is eager to follow through on plans for an eight-day trip to Italy. The excursion will include a team practice, a game against an Italian Football League squad, and, of course, plenty of sightseeing and tours.

About 50 members of the Owls 2023 team will be making the trip, which kicks off with their departure on Sunday, May 19.

The trip also gives the team extra opportunities to practice, which the Owls are currently taking advantage of on campus.

“The trip gives us a chance to travel abroad as a team to explore Italian culture, history and sights, while competing against an Italian professional team,” Ian Good, Kenyon’s head coach, said. “We hope to use our additional practices to continue to develop our players this off-season and to utilize our time together overseas as a bonding experience that will create memories that our players can cherish for the rest of their lives. For some, this may be the first and/or only time they get a chance to travel outside of the country, and what better way to experience it than with your teammates and best friends.”

The first three days of the trip will be spent in Milan, Lake Como, Cinque Terra and nearby Lugano, Switzerland. Then, on Thursday, May 23, the Owls will have their team practice at Palagina Sports Center. Later that day, the group will move on to explore Tuscany and Florence.

Friday, it will be on to the capital city of Rome and Saturday, the Owls will take to the field and compete against the Lazio Ducks, an Italian Football League Senior Division 1 team.

The trip will conclude Sunday, May 26, with a trip to Vatican City and then a return to the United States on Saturday.
