MVNU Suffers Conference Loss to USF

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio– The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team (7-9, 1-5) fell to the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) (10-5, 3-3) on Wednesday, January 10 at Ariel Arena.

MVNU started slowly in the first quarter, trailing 12-3 at one point. It battled back in the second quarter, taking the lead by a score of 17-16 after a Shalen Guilliams three. At the end of the first half, MVNU found itself down 22-17 after a 5-1 USF run. The second half was a back-and-forth battle. The score at the end of the third saw MVNU leading 42-36. USF fought back however, responding with a 21-11 fourth quarter. USF took advantage of some late MVNU turnovers down the stretch, which led to a 57-53 loss for the hosts.

Inside the Box Score:

MVNU shot just 32.8% (20-61) from the field and 23.5% (8-34) from three-point range.

Saint Francis shot 33.9% (21-62) from the field and 16.7% (3-18) from three-point range.

MVNU had 7 turnovers, leading to 15 points for Saint Francis.

Saint Francis outscored MVNU 28 to 16 in the paint.

MVNU was outrebounded 47-41 and gave up 12 offensive rebounds, which led to 8 second chance points.

Noelle Lavery – 17 points (7-14 FG, 3-9 3PT), 4 rebounds.

Shalen Guilliams – 6 points (2-4 FG, 2-4 3PT), 1 rebound.

MVNU will play No.2 Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana on Saturday, January 13. Tipoff is set for 1:00 pm.
