MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (9-7, 2-5 CL) played at the Cougar Softball Field and took on the Lady Cougars from the University of Saint Francis (11-4, 4-1 CL) in a conference match-up on Tuesday, March 18.
Game 1 Summary:
Saint Francis jumped to an early lead against MVNU with a two-run home run to left field. USF continued to keep the offense rolling, scoring a total of nine runs across the third, fourth, and fifth innings. MVNU managed to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Skylar Zimmerman singled to center field and advanced to second on a single by Avery Miller. Mollie Pentz then grounded out to the right side, allowing Zimmerman to score. However, MVNU was ultimately defeated by USF in the bottom of the fifth, with a final score of 11-1.
Game 2 Summary:
Maddelyn Wine earned her fifth win of the season, facing 26 batters and striking out nine. MVNU got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first inning and then ignited their offense in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs. The inning began with Kiera Mayer’s single to center, followed by a deep shot from Dakota Staffan that brought Mayer home. Kylie Rohr then doubled to right field, and Pentz added a double to left. MVNU’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wine closed out the game in the circle during the top of the seventh, helping lead the Lady Cougars of Mount Vernon to a 6-0 victory.
What’s Next:
MVNU will be traveling to take on the Goshen College Maple Leafs on Friday, March 21. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
