Maggio’s Masterclass Breaks MVNU All-Time Single-Game Scoring Record With 41 Points

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. —  The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team (4-2) faced the Lawrence Technological University Blue Devils (1-4) at home on Saturday, November 16, in Ariel Arena.

The day featured a masterclass performance by redshirt sophomore guard Teresa Maggio from Lafayette, Indiana. Maggio broke the MVNU Women’s Basketball single-game scoring record. The previous mark of 40 points, set by Anne Nussbaum against Oakland City on March 11, 2000, now stands surpassed by Maggio with 41 points on November 16, 2024, vs LTU.

The first quarter started off tightly, with MVNU leading 6-5 at the 5:59 mark. MVNU then went on a 6-point run, capped by a Maggio layup at 4:15, pushing the lead to 12-5. Lawrence Tech responded, narrowing the gap to 14-12. At the end of the quarter, MVNU held an 18-12 lead over LTU. Maggio had 10 points in the quarter.

In the second quarter, MVNU built its largest lead of the first half, going up by 14 points after Serenitee Johnson’s layup, assisted by Maggio, made the score 34-20. The halftime score had MVNU leading LTU 40-29. The second quarter featured strong performances, including 9 points from Maggio and 7 points off the bench from Katie Sprang.

The third quarter was when Maggio’s Masterclass erupted in Ariel Arena. Maggio scored 16 points, shooting 100% from the field and going 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. She also recorded 3 steals on the defensive end. MVNU outscored LTU 24-6 in the third, leading 64-35 as they entered the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, at the 6:01 mark, Maggio made a layup to reach 41 points, breaking an MVNU record. The team’s largest lead of the game came in the fourth quarter when they were up by 35 points at the 3:06 mark. MVNU went on to win the game against LTU with a final score of 84-49.

MVNU showcased great efficiency, shooting 52.3% from the field (34-65) and hitting 30.0% of its three-point attempts (3-10) during the game.

Lawrence Tech struggled offensively, shooting 28.6% from the field (18-63) and converting 31.8% of its three-point attempts (7-22).

The Lady Cougars recorded 22 assists on the day, while LTU had just 8.

MVNU dominated the paint, outscoring its opponents 54-22.

The Lady Cougars capitalized on the Blue Devils’ 19 turnovers, turning them into 24 points.

Johnson – 4 points (2-7 FG), 7 assists, 5 rebounds,3 blocks, 2 steals.

Angela Roshak – 8 points (4-10 FG), 9 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal, 1 assist.

Sprang – 7 points (3-7 FG, 1-2 3PT), 2 rebounds, 1 steal.

Olivia Skillings – 6 points (2-2 FG, 2-2 FT), 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal.

Emily Walker – 2 points (1-2 FG), 5 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal.

What’s Next:

The women’s basketball team will begin Crossroads League Conference play on the road against Spring Arbor University on Wednesday, November 20, in Spring Arbor, Michigan. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at American 1 Credit Union Arena.
