Lexington stays unbeaten with win over Mount Vernon

The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets boys basketball team knew they had a tough task on their hands at unbeaten Lexington Tuesday Night and despite a strong finish the Jackets fell to the Minutemen 73-64. The Jackets (6-6, 4-3) couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start as the opening tip was poked to Lexington star Sophomore Brayden Fogle for a lay in and two point lead. Fogle would score the first 4 buckets of the game including two huge dunks to give Lexington an 11-0 lead with 522 to go in the opening period. In true Jacket form Mount Vernon did not give up. Isaiah Columber got the Jackets on the board at the 448 mark and Andrew Burke got a score to make it 11-4 with 417 to go in the quarter. Fogle and the Jackets Jack Marhefka traded buckets before Seven Allen scored and Fogle dunked another one home to give Lexington a 17-6 lead with 312 to go first quarter. Zane Barber got a three point play to cut into the lead and he also had a put back that helped the Jackets trail just 21-13 after one.

Jakob Legron opening the scoring in the second quarter with a three for the Minutemen as Barber and Marhefka traded buckets with Joe Caudill and Seven Allen for Lexington. Caudill was hot in the second quarter scoring 6 points in the period and Lexington led 42-26 at half.

Mount Vernon came out in the third quarter and outscored Lexington 201-8. Fogle got the scoring started but Marhefka and Burke hit back to back threes to make it 44-32 Lexington with 648 left in the third. Columber hit a three at the 420 mark to cut the lead to 8 but another dunk by Fogle helped the Minutemen to a 60-46 lead going to the fourth. The lead increased to 15 after a Elijah Hudson score for Lexington but the Jackets didn’t give in and Burke got hot hitting three straight threes to get the Jackets to within 67-62 with 54 seconds left. Seven Allen hit two free throws and Hudson scored to up the lead to 9 and the Jackets fell 73-64.

Burke led Mount Vernon with 18 points, he grabbed 3 rebounds. Zane Barber had 16 and 4 boards and Marhefka scored 15 points with 7 rebounds in the loss. Rowland had 8 and 6.

Fogle scored a game high 26 points for Lexington and grabbed 11 rebounds. Allen scored 15 points with 8 rebounds. Caudill scored 12 and Hudson had 10 for the Jackets.
