Lady Cougars Victorious Over Ohio Christian and Point Park

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (2-2) continued its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida against Ohio Christian University (2-3) and Point Park University (2-4) on Thursday, February 29.

MVNU took down Ohio Christian in its first game of the day by a final score of 5-1. It was a slow start for both teams as neither team drove in any runs until the sixth inning. Kennady Ruhl and Mallory Holcomb each claimed an RBI for MVNU. Zhari Hill, Kiera Mayer, Brooklyn Krum, Ruhl, and Holcomb were all able to round the bases and create the 5-0 lead for MVNU.

MVNU’s pitching was strong as Nadia Hoffman and Bailey Sheets were phenomenal for the team. Hoffman pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just one run off seven hits. The junior had four strikeouts. Sheets pitched 1.2 innings of relief and gave up no runs or hits while striking out one.

Game two saw MVNU pull off a comeback win over Point Park by a final score of 3-2. The Pioneers started strong, scoring in the first and fourth inning. However, MVNU slowly started to mount a comeback. The Lady Cougars scored one run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take the victory in extras. Mayer sent the game into the eighth with a clutch RBI-single with two outs. The game was won for MVNU when Mollie Pentz reached first on an error, allowing Avery Miller to come rounding home.

Maddelyn Wine got the win, pitching all eight innings and allowing just six hits and one earned run. Wine had one strikeout.

MVNU will play Penn State-Brandywine and Judson (IL) in Clermont, Florida on Saturday, March 2. Game times are 4:00pm and 6:15pm.
