Lady Cougars Swept at No.18 Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The receiving votes Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (27-9, 17-7) dropped two games at No.18 Marian University (30-7, 20-6) on Tuesday, April 19.

Game One

The first game of the doubleheader was all Marian as the Knights walked away with an 8-0 victory in five-innings. After a Knight run in the first, Marian did a majority of the damage in the second-inning with six runs scored, pushing their lead to 7-0. Another Marian run in the third set up the run-rule as the score was now 8-0. The offense was not able to get going for MVNU as it was unable to get a run across to extend the ballgame after five. The Lady Cougars had one hit in the game.

Game Two

The second game was a nail-bitter, but unfortunately for MVNU things did not go its way late. The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 4-2 lead after a three-run top of the fifth-inning. Megan Pentz hit a two-run single and Kaycee Ollis hit an RBI-single in the very next at bat. In the bottom of the frame, Marian tied the game with two runs of its own. With neither team able to score the winning run through seven, extra innings were needed to settle the outcome.

MVNU was able to threaten and load the bases in the top of the eighth, but was unable to bring home the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the inning, Marian hit a lead-off triple. A single in the next at bat resulted in a 5-4 walk-off win for the Knights.
