Lady Cougars Sweep Spring Arbor in Crossroads Opener

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (12-2, 2-0) opened Crossroads League play with a sweep of Spring Arbor University (6-7, 0-2) on March 15, 2022.

Game One

The Lady Cougars only needed five innings to defeat Spring Arbor in the first game of the series. Tied at 1-1, MVNU took the lead for good in the bottom-third on a Macee Marcum RBI single that scored Kylee Matern. The Lady Cougars broke the game open in the fourth with four runs. Mackenzie Hancock started the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to center that scored Maddison Ruhl. Matern then grounded out, scoring Kennady Ruhl. Megan Pentz added on with a two-run single that scored Nevaeh Clark and Hancock, giving MVNU a 6-1 lead. MVNU scored three more runs in the fifth to force a run-rule by a score of 9-1.

Sheridan Sullivan got the win as she pitched five innings. Sullivan struck-out five and allowed just three hits and one earned run.

Game Two

MVNU continued to roll in game two. After putting up 12 hits in game one, the Lady Cougars accumulated 10 hits for six runs in the second game. Matern led MVNU with three hits. Pentz, Marcum, Ollis, K. Ruhl, and Hancock each had RBIs for MVNU. K. Ruhl hit her second homerun of the season in the 6-2 win.

Nadia Hoffman got the start and the win. Hoffman pitched seven innings, allowing nine hits and two runs (one earned). Hoffman struck-out three.

What’s Next

MVNU returns to action on Friday, March 18 at the University of Saint Francis. Game one of the doubleheader in Fort Wayne, Indiana is set for 3:00pm.
