Lady Cougars Sweep Saint Francis

No.20 Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball (25-10, 17-10 CL) broke out the brooms on Tuesday, April 18 as it swept the University of Saint Francis (12-22, 6-18 CL) at Cougar Field.

MVNU run-ruled USF in five innings by a score of 11-3 in game one. MVNU wasted no time as it jumped on the visitors from Fort Wayne with five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-1 lead. USF pushed across runs in the third and fourth innings, making the score 5-3, MVNU. After platting a run in the bottom of the fourth on a Macee Marcum RBI, MVNU exploded for five runs in the fifth to force a run-rule. MVNU had 12 hits in the ballgame and was led by a three-hit performance from Kylee Pettit. Paige Ogden went 2-3 at the plate with three RBI.

Maddelyn Wine pitched 3.2 innings and got the win in the circle as she allowed seven hits and three runs (one earned).

In game two, MVNU won by a final of 7-2. A two-run homerun from Ogden in the bottom of the second injected life into the Lady Cougar offense early. MVNU got two runs in the third, a run in the fourth, and two more in the seventh to put the game away. Ogden finished with another 2-3 game at the plate and accounted for two RBI. Nadia Hoffman pitched seven innings and gave up two hits and two runs. Hoffman had eight strikeouts.

What’s Next

MVNU hosts No.12 Marian University on Wednesday, April 19 at Cougar Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:00pm.
