Lady Cougars Improve Win Streak to Five with Sweep of USF

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio– The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (25-17, 18-12) hosted the University of Saint Francis (18-27, 11-21) in another Crossroads League doubleheader at the Cougar Softball Field on Monday, April 22.


In game one, USF went up 2-0 after scoring in the top of the second and fifth innings.

MVNU quickly answered back in the bottom of the fifth with a Mallory Holcomb sacrifice fly, bringing in Kylie Rohr and narrowing the gap to 1-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Avery Miller grounded out to second base, allowing Zhari Hill to score to tie the game at 2-2. With both teams deadlocked, the game entered extra innings. USF went up 3-2 in the top of the tenth inning. MVNU then scored twice in the bottom of the inning from Kiera Mayer’s sacrifice fly to score Holcomb, followed by Mackenzie Hancock’s walk-off RBI single that brought home Mollie Pentz, securing a thrilling 4-3 victory for MVNU.

In the second game of the doubleheader, USF got up 2-0 in the top of the first. MVNU responded with Mayer’s single to left field, scoring Holcomb and narrowing the lead to 1-2. MVNU continued its offensive momentum in the first inning as Hancock’s double to right field drove in Pentz. Hill’s ground out to third base allowed Mayer to score, putting MVNU ahead 3-2. Another run came in as Rohr reached first on an error, bringing Hancock home and extending the lead to 4-2. In the top of the second inning, USF hit an RBI single to center field, cutting MVNU’s lead to 4-3. MVNU responded again in the third inning, with Sydney Hoover’s RBI groundout bringing in Brooklyn Krum, pushing the lead to 5-3. MVNU held on to its lead, ultimately winning the game by a final score of 5-3.

What’s Next:

MVNU softball will host No.8 Marian University in a home doubleheader on Tuesday, April 23. The first game starts at 3:00pm at the Cougar Softball Field.
