Lady Cougars Extend Winning Streak to 15 after Sweep at Grace

WINONA LAKE, Ind. — The receiving votes Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (18-2, 8-0) swept Grace College (8-13, 5-5) on Wednesday, March 30 to extend its winning streak to 15 games.

Game One

MVNU faced adversity early in the first game of the series after it fell behind 0-3 after the third-inning. The Lady Cougars showed poise as they stayed focus to tie the game. Three runs in the top of the sixth thanks to RBI’s from Kaycee Ollis, Maddison Ruhl, and Maddelyn Wine evened the score at three. In extra innings, Ollis gave MVNU its first lead in the top of the eighth with a homer. The Lancers responded back in the bottom of the inning with a run to tie it. In the top of the 12, MVNU scored the winning run after Kylee Matern hit an RBI-single to bring Kennady Ruhl home. Grace could not muster up a run in the bottom frame, allowing MVNU to escape with a 5-4 win.

Sheridan Sullivan got the start. Sullivan pitched six-innings and allowed seven hits and three runs. Sullivan struck out eight. Maddelyn Wine pitched two innings of relief, allowing two hits and one earned run. She struck-out one. Nadia Hoffman pitched four great innings of relief as well. The freshman struck-out five while allowing just one hit and no runs. Hoffman picked up the win for MVNU.

Game Two

Trailing 1-2 heading into the third, MVNU scored seven runs in the top of the inning to capture all momentum. Due to darkness and rain, the game was declared final after six-innings with MVNU holding a 9-3 advantage. Mackenzie Hancock finished 2-2 at the plate and tied a game-high with two RBI. Macee Marcum finished 1-2 at the plate with two RBI as well.

Hoffman picked up her second win of the day for MVNU after pitching five-innings. She struck-out four and allowed two hits and two earned runs.

What’s Next

MVNU will next play on Friday, April 1 in Upland, Indiana in a doubleheader at Taylor University. The series is set to begin at 4:00pm.
