Lady Cougars Extend Win Streak to Eight, Hoffman Pitches No-Hitter

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (27-7, 17-5) swept Bethel University (5-25, 4-18) on Saturday, April 16 by scores of 9-4 and 9-0 on the road.

Game One

Bethel jumped out to a quick 2-1 advantage after the first-inning, but it was all MVNU from there. After tying the game at 2-2, MVNU scored three runs in the bottom-third to begin taking control. Macee Marcum hit an RBI-single that scored Megan Pentz, Kaycee Ollis scored on an RBI-groundout from Maddelyn Wine, and Marcum scored due to a wild pitch to cap off the three-run inning. After another run in the fourth, MVNU added three more in the fifth to put the game away for good. Pentz hit an RBI-double that scored Matern, and Ollis hit a two-run single that scored Pentz and Maddison Ruhl.

Wine got the start and the win for MVNU. Wine pitched six-innings and allowed six hits and two earned runs. Wine had six strikeouts in the 9-4 win.

Game Two

Game two was highlighted by a great pitching performance from freshman Nadia Hoffman. Hoffman pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the run-ruled contest. Hoffman had 11 strikeouts in the 9-0 win.

Offensively, MVNU had 14 hits in the ballgame M. Ruhl had a team-high three hits in her three plate appearances and finished with two RBI. Marcum and Pentz each collected two RBI’s as well in the game two win. With the victory, MVNU sits in second place in the Crossroads League.

What’s Next

MVNU heads to Indianapolis, Indiana on Tuesday, April 19 for a doubleheader at No.18 Marian University. The series begins at 3:00pm.
