Jackets and Wildcats face off in Week Two of High School Football

One team will be 2-0 after this week’s clash between Mount Vernon and Newark at White Field in Licking County. The Jackets are coming off an impressive week one win that saw them score 27 points in the third quarter of a 45-20 win over Marion Harding. The game was highlighted by a pair of defensive touchdowns. A 97 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Mason Richards and an interception return for a touchdown by Johnny Askew. The Jackets also had a 33 yard touchdown pass from Jake Taylor to Richards.

The Presidents ran 20 more plays than the Jackets and outgained Mount Vernon by 80 yards. The Jackets though had 5 takeaways on defense. Coach Jay Campbell of Mount Vernon says this team wants to establish the run and play good defense which they obviously did last week.

The last time the Jackets opened a season 2-0 was 2019 when they won their first 4 games in what was a 6-4 season.

Newark meanwhile defeated Zanesville last week 35-21. Outscoring the Blue Devils 28-0 after falling behind 21-7. Newark quarterback Steele Meister ran for 59 yards and 3 scores and threw for two other touchdowns. Drayson Peterson had 132 yards receiving to lead the Wildcats.

Newark won last year’s matchup 35-34. Mount Vernon won 41-20 in 2021.
