Hot Hitting Leads to Two Wins For MVNU Cougars Baseball Against Lancers

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (10-6, 6-0) remained perfect in Crossroads League play as it beat the Grace College Lancers (7-10, 1-5) twice on the road on Monday, March 11.

MVNU trailed 5-7 heading into the top of the ninth in the first game but rallied to come back and win thanks to four late runs. A bases-loaded double by Hogan Heck put MVNU ahead, and then Heck would end up scoring due to an error at third base in the next at-bat. With a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, Cruz McFadden came in and got the save. He struck out two Lancers in the process. Logan Fox got the start and pitched six innings, giving up six runs and striking out 11 Lancers. A. Fox came into the game in relief of his older brother and picked up the win after pitching two innings. Austin Fox gave up four hits and one run while striking out two.

MVNU carried over the hot hitting from the first game over into the second as it erupted for 17 hits in the 13-5 win. Joe Poremsky smashed his third homerun of the season to open the floodgates in the fifth inning and finished with three RBI. Rider Minnick, Casey Kalman and Johnny Nixon each had three RBI in the game as well. Brady Lester batted in two on the day.

Jarin Bertke picked up the win after pitching 5.2 innings. The junior gave up six hits, four runs, and a walk while striking out eight Lancers. Maxwell Donawa pitched 1.1 innings of relief and allowed a hit and a run while finishing the game with two strikeouts.

MVNU hosts Huntington University on Friday, March 15. The doubleheader begins at 1:00pm.
