Freddies stave off Trojans, will play for KMAC Title Friday Night

The Fredericktown Freddies boys basketball team got up by as many as 13 points in the first half of their home KMAC win over Centerburg 65-54 Tuesday Night to set up a showdown in Cardington Friday Night.

Gavin Toombs got the scoring started for the now 14-4 Freddies, (12-1 KMAC). Jack Lawrence answered for the Trojans 10-8 (8-5) before Carson Rinehart and Trevin Harris traded makes and it was tied at 4 with 545 to go in the period. Back to back scores from Toombs and a Blake Sipes put back made it 10-4 Freddies with 4 minutes to play in the period. After Jack Lawrence hit a jumper, Rinehart made one of two free throws and Hill hit a pair of free throws for Centeburg to make it 11-8. Sipes and Harris matched baskets before Toombs got a two to go to make it 15-10 Freddies after one.

In the second quarter the Freddies went on a 6-0 run to start the quarter to lead 21-10 with 627 to go in the period. Thomas Schaller got his only points of the game at a make at the rim before Zane Luckmeier scored for the Freddies to got up 23-12 with 517 left in the half. Schaller missed a pair of free throws before Lawrence scored for Centerburg and Zane Luckmeier hit a three for the Freddies, Toombs made a free throw at the 301 mark but it would be the last points of the period for the Freddies as Centerburg ended the half on a 9-0 run on an and one from Lawrence, a three by Bennett Hill and a steal and lay in by Hill made it 27-22 Freddies. Lawrence made 1 of 2 from the line right before the half for the Freddies lead to be cut to 4 at 27-23.

In the third Sipes got the scoring started with a put back but Isiah Sule scored 25 seconds later as it stayed a 4 point game. Rinehart hit a pair of free throws before Brode Davis got his first points on a bunny and Rinehart hit two more from the line to got up 35-25 with 540 left in the third. Hill and Sipes traded buckets before Sipes hit one of two from the line with the second miss resulting in a put back by Rinehart to go up 40-27. Toombs made it a 15 point game with two from the line as Harris then got a Centerburg score. Hill got a free throw before Davis nailed a three for the Freddies to go up 15 with 136 left in the third. After a Harris two, Sipes got one of two free throws to got and the Freddies led by 14 after 3.

In the fourth Toombs opened up the scoring with his first field goal of the second half to push the lead to 16 but Lawrence answered for Centerburg to get it back to 14. Tanner Estep got a two before a pair of Hill free throws made it 52-38 with 548 to play. Toombs got another score to got back up 16 but 5 straight from Harris, including a three, cut the lead to 54-43 with 420 to go. After Toombs and Rinehart hit back to back buckets to push the lead back to 15 with just over 3 minutes to play Jack Lawrence got an and one and 4 straight free throw makes, two each by Hill and Harris made it 58-50 with 157 to play. Hill got a two 47 seconds later to make it 58-52 but Rinehart hit two big free throws to push the lead back to 8 and Toombs added a free throw to go up 9. Harris scored but it was answered by Toombs. Zane Luckmeier finished the scoring with two free throws at the line to send the Freddies to a 65-54 win.

Gavin Toombs led the way with 24 points. He came into the game third in the KMAC in scoring at 18 ppg. Rinehart had 15 and Sipes added 12 for the Freddies. Harris and Lawrence each scored 17 for Centerburg and Hill added 16 points for the Trojans.
