Freddies lose lead in Third Quarter and fall in District Finals in Girl’s Basketball

The Fredericktown Girls Basketball team had a historic season, winning the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference and making it to the District Final unfortunately for them it ended Saturday with a loss in the Division Five District Final versus Africentric 46-38 at Ohio Dominican University. The Freddies finished with 20 wins and Cally Carpenter became the school’s All Time Leading scorer in Girl’s Basketball.

The game started quick for now 18-7 Africentric on a bucket by Jeniya Bowers but the Lady Freddies answered with an 8-0 run on four points from Mya Bryant and buckets by Carpenter and Kennedy Algire. Bowers and Shaunie Little made it 8-6 to end the quarter, the Freddies led but Carpenter picked up her second foul with just under 90 seconds to go in the quarter.

Carpenter started the second quarter with a score and then traded three with Bowers to go up 13-9. After Bowers scored, Vika Arnett got her first points for the Freddies and Ella Bouton bagged two threes to go up 17-11 with 433 left in the half. Faith Martin hit a three for the Nubians before a Carpenter score. Martin and Bryant each got a bucket before the Freddies closed the half with a free throw each by Bouton and Carpenter and holding the Nubians scoreless the final 252 of the half they went to the locker room up 23-16.

In the third the lead was pushed to ten after Little missed two free throws and Carpenter converted on an and one to go up 26-16 with 656 to go in the period. Jae’veyonna Brown got her first points to close the gap to 9, Bowers then scored before Brown got a bucket and a free throw as part of a 7-0 run. The Freddies missed two free throws Bouton scored for Fredericktown to go up 5 with 420 to go in the third. Back to back scores from Nyajah Harris mad it a one point game and after Bowers hit two free throws the Nubians took the lead 29-28 with 216 left in the third. Bryant quickly answered to give the Freddies the lead back and Bouton extended it with a three. Shaunie Little then caught fire. She got two free throws and a score within 34 seconds of each other to tie the game going to the fourth quarter.

Bowers gave the Nubians the lead just over a minute into the fourth quarter and Little got a steal and lay in to make it 37-33 with 634 left. Little extended the lead to 8 with another bucket and two free throws and a pair of Bowers free throws made it 43-33 with 235 left in favor of the Nubians. Bouton cut into the lead with a three and Algire scored to make it 43-35 with 119 left. Bowers hit two free throws with 40 seconds left and Little made 1/2 from the line late to seal the win for the Nubians.

Bowers had 19 and Little added 11 in the win. Africentric will play Clear Fork in a Regional Semifinal Wednesday. Carpenter scored 13 for the Freddies but none after the Freddies were up 10 with 656 to go in the third quarter. Bouton scored 11 and Bryant added 8.
