Cougars Upset Maple Leafs in Five Set Thriller

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s volleyball team (11-13, 4-9) pulled off a big WHAC upset against Goshen College (19-9, 6-7) in five sets on Wednesday, March 23.

Goshen, who is receiving votes in the national poll, started fast as it took the first set 25-19. MVNU stayed calm, taking the next two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-19. The Maple Leafs tied the match after taking a tight set four by a score of 25-23 before dropping the fifth and final set to the Cougars 16-14. With the win, MVNU dashed any hopes of the Maple Leafs making the WHAC tournament.

Inside the Box Score

Spencer Stanley had a big time performance with a match-high 21 kills. Stanley had 11 digs as well for the Cougars.

Landon Ewers had 12 kills, including the match-winning kill for MVNU. Ewers had seven block assists and one solo block.

Jaysen Matsumoto had a match-high 52 assists and 10 digs for MVNU.

Caden Donaldson and Riley Barretto had 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

What’s Next

The Cougars will finish their season on Saturday, March 26 at (RV) Siena Heights University. First serve in Adrian, Michigan is set for 3:00pm.
