MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s basketball team (11-7, 3-5 CL) welcomed the Marian University Knights (8-10, 2-6 CL) to Ariel Arena on Wednesday, January 15, for a Crossroads League showdown.
The Cougars overcame an early 0-2 deficit with an impressive 9-point run, taking a 9-2 lead by the 16:45 mark. Marian fought back, cutting the lead to four points at 16-12 with 10:05 left in the first half. MVNU responded by holding Marian scoreless until the 7:11 mark while extending their lead to 24-14. The Cougars secured their largest advantage of the half, 34-18, at the 2:53 mark. At halftime, MVNU led 37-27 in a low-scoring first half.
MVNU scored the first basket of the second half, but the Knights quickly responded with a run, narrowing the score to 39-33 before MVNU answered at the 17:09 mark. By 15:50, the lead was trimmed to just five points as Marian found its offensive rhythm in the second half. With 10:51 remaining, MVNU held a slim two-point lead, setting the stage for an intense showdown marked by back-and-forth scoring and lead changes. At the 2:56 mark, the Knights secured a four-point advantage, 61-57, forcing the Cougars to battle back in the final moments.
MVNU capitalized down the stretch and got into the double bonus, hitting 9 of 11 free throws in the final 2:21. With lockdown defense and an energized crowd, MVNU secured a narrow 66-63 victory.
