Centerburg wins share of KMAC with victory over Freddies and help

The Centerburg Lady Trojans now only need to win one of their final two conference games to win the KMAC outright after a 47-34 win over Fredericktown Tuesday night teamed with a Mount Gilead win over Cardington Lincoln gave them a share of the league title . The Lady Trojans improved to 13-3 and 8-2 KMAC with two remaining conference games.

It was a fast start for Centerburg as they got up 10-0 in the first nearly 5 minutes. Kayla Larimore, the KMAC’s leading scorer got things started with a transition bucket and Tiara Sheppard added a score to give the Lady Trojans a 4-0 lead. The 10-0 start was ended with a score from Mya Bryant from the Freddies at the 1:44 mark but a Kennedi Glenn triple up the lead to 13-2. It was 13-4 after one.

In the second quarter the Freddies got rolling at Kit Bellman scored and Bryant and Cally Carpenter went back to back with buckets to cut the lead to 13-10 with 4:50 to go in the half. The Fairall sisters scored the next four points with a lay in by Kenlee and put back by Chesnee to up the Lady Trojans lead to 17-10. The lead was further extended with a free throw by Clara Johnson. Jill Bouton got a score for Fredericktown and Bryant scored to make it 18-14 Centerburg with 45 seconds left in the half. Larimore hit one of two free throws before going down right before the second quarter horn and hit a deep three at the buzzer to give Centerburg a 22-14 halftime lead.

In the third quarter Ella Bouton scored for the first time for the Freddies with a three. Larimore scored 6 of the next 8 points as the Lady Trojans went on an 8-0 run to go up 30-17. Bellman got a score to stop the run and Carpenter got a steal and score to cut the lead to 30-21 with 1:44 left in the third. Larimore got a two but Ella Bouton hit another 3 and Jill Bouton got a two pointer to make it 32-26 Centerburg up after 3.

In the fourth quarter Sheppard scored and Carpenter answered to make it 34-28 Centerburg at the 6:35 mark. The biggest shot of the game came 19 seconds later as Clara Johnson hit a corner three to put the Trojans up 9. Bryant got a put back and Sheppard hit a pair of free throws. After a two by the Freddies Centerburg scored 4 straight on a lay in by Johnson and bucket by Larimore to got up 43-32 with 4:10 left. Carpenter and Johnson traded buckets and Sheppard hit two free throws late to finish off the scoring 47-34.

Larimore came in averaging 19.1 points per game and scored 20. Sheppard added 12 points for the Lady Trojans. Mya Bryant scored 8 points for the Freddies, Carpenter added 8.
