Centerburg downs Mount Gilead in battle of unbeatens in Girls Basketball

The Centerburg Lady Trojans girls basketball team came into Tuesday’s match up having dominated en route to a 4-0 record to open the season including a 40 point over Northmor and a 74-25 win over Danville in KMAC play but Tuesday was a defensive clinic for the Lady Trojans in a 45-7 win over Mount Gilead at home.

The Lady Trojans got on the board a minute and 18 seconds into the game and cruised to victory. Lauren Ellis opened the scoring and Kayla Larimore, the KMAC’s reigning Player of the Year, hit a pair of triples in the opening period and scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Lady Trojans led 18-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Centerburg’s Tiara Sheppard scored a pair of buckets to start the second quarter to up the Centerburg lead to 22-0 with 428 left in the half. Chesnee Fairall scored her first bucket to up the lead to 24-0 with 337 seconds to go in the half her sister Kenlee then scored before Chesnee got a put back to make it 28-0 with 1:18 left in the half. Evie Stowe made it 30-0 at the one minute mark. The Lady Indians brought in JV players to finish the half and their lone score came at the 35 second mark when Bailey Bault scored. Sheppard got the last points of the half to make it 32-2 Centerburg at half.

Sheppard stayed hot to start the third with a bucket and Kendall Neal of the Lady Indians answered with a score. Larimore got back to back scores and Sheppard scored again to make it 40-4 and then Kenlee Trainer hit 1 of 2 free throws and it was 40-5 Centerburg after three.

The fourth quarter was a running clock so there wasn’t a lot of scoring. Kenlee Fairall got a bucket and Faith White, the KMAC’s second leading scorer got her first points at the 650 mark to make it 42-7 Centerburg, the Indians would not score the rest of the game however. Sheppard hit 1/2 free throws and Evie Stowe got the last points to finish the game at 45-7.

Sheppard had 16 for the Lady Trojans, who are now 5-0. Larimore added 14 points. The Lady Trojans are now 3-0 in KMAC Play.

Bault had 2, White had 2, Trainer had 1 and Neal had 2 for the Lady Indians.
