Baseball Falls to Point Park and Cornerstone

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team (2-3) began its spring season on Monday, February 26 in Davenport, Florida.

MVNU started the day with a seven-inning game against Point Park University (6-5). MVNU found itself down after a two-run third inning from Point Park got the scoring started. The Pioneers added another run in the third inning to go up 3-0. Rider Minnick gave MVNU its first run of the game with an RBI-triple in the fifth, cutting the deficit to two. Johnny Nixon added a run for MVNU with a solo homer in the sixth, making the score 2-3. Point Park tacked on two more in the seventh to pad its lead. MVNU wouldn’t go down quietly as it got an RBI-double from Casey Kalman to bring it to within one. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they were unable to push across the game tying run and would fall by a final of 4-5.

Logan Fox was tagged with the loss on the mound as he started and pitched three innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs while striking out two batters. Maxwell Donawa pitched four innings of relief, allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out one batter in the game.

In the second game of the day, MVNU took on Cornerstone University (2-0) where it would fall by a final of 3-5. MVNU struck first in the fourth and MVNU responded in the fifth with an RBI-single from Zackary Hoop. The Golden Eagles then answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to claim a 3-1 lead. Cornerstone padded the lead with two more runs in the sixth. Trailing 1-5, MVNU was able to scratch across two runs thanks to Kalman’s two-RBI single to right field. Unfortunately for the Cougars, they were unable to get any closer.

Jarin Bertke got the start and pitched four innings. He allowed just one hit and one earned run while striking out seven batters.

MVNU takes on Cornerstone again today in Davenport, Florida at 12:30pm.
