On October 26th, 2025 at approximately 6:00 pm, patrol officers from the Mount Vernon
Police Department responded to a reported domestic violence incident. The incident
occurred at a single-family residence located in the 100 block of North Division Street.
Upon their arrival, officers located a single adult female victim outside of the residence.
Based on the information provided by the victim, including statements that the suspect
brandished a firearm and threatened to kill the victim, a warrant was issued for the arrest of
the suspect, Calvin P. Canter, 33, for Domestic Violence.
When officers approached the residence to effect the arrest of Canter, the incident quickly
escalated to an armed standoff with the barricaded suspect.
At this time the Mount Vernon Police Department Emergency Services Unit (ESU) was
activated and responded to the scene. Mount Vernon ESU was also assisted by members
of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Unit (TRU) Team and several
deputies. Detectives from the Police Department were also called to the location.
During the standoff, officers attempted numerous times to peacefully resolve the situation.
However, the suspect fired several gunshots and made multiple comments, including
threats directly towards the officers present. He repeatedly indicated that he would not
surrender. After the approximately seven-hour standoff, the suspect was found to have
barricaded himself in the attic space of the home, where he committed suicide via a single
gunshot.
This incident is still under investigation by Mount Vernon Police Department Detective
Division and the Knox County Coroner’s Office.
In accordance with the provisions of Ohio’s Marsy’s Law, the victim’s identification will not
be released at this time.
