MVNU instrumental ensembles to perform

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — The Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University will present a spring instrumental ensembles concert on Tuesday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel Auditorium. The community is invited to attend this free event that features the Jazz Band, Flute Choir, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

The MVNU Jazz Band will present a varied program of jazz standards, pop, and beautiful ballads. Selections will include a wonderful pop ballad made famous by the late Karen Carpenter entitled “This Masquerade,” and performed by Caitlin Rowe. George Shearing’s “Conception,” arranged by Mark Taylor will be sure to wake-up the house, followed by Henry Mancini’s “Dreamsville.” The band will also perform a beautiful ballad by Bob Curnow entitled “Promise of Dreams” that will include a flute and piano duet performed by Judy Bennett and Christopher Hawthorne. The Jazz Band is directed by Mr. Chuck Dettmar.

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble program is inspired by the theme of “choreography” and will begin with Robert Sheldon’s composition with that same title. The concert will continue with an arrangement of ‘Suite of Old American Dances” by Robert Russell Bennett and “Scenes from The Louvre” by Norman Dello Joio. Also featured to accompany the music will be visual artworks created by students from the MVNU Art Department. The performance will conclude with a concert suite of music from “Cirque du Soleil.” The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is directed by Dr. John Packard.

The Flute Choir, comprised of MVNU students and community members, and directed by Mrs. Jennifer Packard, will also perform several works.
