MOUNT VERNON, (June 7, 2022) Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s online Master of Science in Nursing program has received five-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org), valid through June 30, 2027.
Accreditation provides evidence the program meets the high standards set by CCNE, an autonomous accrediting agency that ensures the quality and integrity of nursing programs. This voluntary accreditation supports and encourages MVNU to self-assess, continue growth, and improve collegiate professional education.
For current and prospective MSN students, accreditation means they can have confidence their MVNU education will be consistent from the first class through graduation.
“Having CCNE accreditation demonstrates the MSN degree at MVNU provides high quality education that adheres to rigorous standards,” said Dr. Carol Dorough, Dean of MVNU’s School of Nursing and Health Sciences. “For prospective employers, it is assurance that the value and legitimacy of the degree is equivalent to on-campus programs, since accreditation standards are the same for both teaching formats.”
Currently, the MSN program offers a Nurse Educator track that prepares graduates to teach in academic and clinical settings and have a voice in staff and policy development through instruction in advanced nursing practices, nursing role development, building curricula, designing programs and courses, methods for clinical instruction, and optimally evaluating learning outcomes. Additional tracks are scheduled to be added in the near future.
In the process, the flexible format ensures that nurses who have already climbed the ranks within the healthcare field won’t have to take time off to advance their career.
“This is a great option for those who burn out or need a change from direct patient care. This is not something you can do in everyday care. It allows you to stay current with skills without getting too far away from practicing skills,” said Dr. Judy Gregg, incoming Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
The program, which takes 19 months to complete with 6-week accelerated online instruction, reflects the mission of MVNU’s School of Nursing and Health Sciences including the application of Biblical principles within a professional healthcare context.
“MVNU is intentional in its mission to teach our nurses to provide good spiritual care for patients. Faith forums are part of the weekly instruction to incorporate faith into the real-life aspects of nursing,” said Gregg.
The first MSN class started in 2020 with graduates earning diplomas in April 2022. CCNE accreditation retroactively applies to those graduates, many of whom are already enjoying career advancement.
