The City of Mount Vernon has begun replacing damaged sidewalk and curbing along the south side of Coshocton Avenue in the area of North Catherine Street. According to the city, the existing sidewalk had sunk below the curb, creating uneven surfaces and limiting accessibility for pedestrians.
The work, completed by Smith Paving and Excavating of Norwalk, includes installing a wider sidewalk and removing a narrow one‑foot tree lawn. The project also upgrades curb ramps to meet ADA standards, improving access for residents traveling to nearby retail areas.
City Engineer Brian Ball said the improvements will make the corridor safer and easier to navigate for both drivers and pedestrians. He noted that while new sidewalks were recently added from Gambier Street to Coshocton Avenue, the Coshocton segment remained in poor condition and difficult to use.
The project is funded through Tax Increment Financing, which allows local governments to reinvest future increases in property tax revenue into infrastructure and community improvements such as sidewalk upgrades.
