Two members of the Mount Vernon Fire Department are preparing to embark on a challenging six-day journey across Ohio waterways in support of veterans, first responders, and their families.
Fire Chief Chad Christopher and Lieutenant Nate Hines will participate in the annual Paddle for Heroes event, which begins Sunday, June 7, and concludes in Marietta later in the week.
The event, now celebrating its 10th year, brings together first responders, military veterans, and supporters from across Ohio for a multi-day paddle designed to raise awareness for those who have served their communities and country. Participants travel hundreds of miles by kayak and canoe while honoring the sacrifices made by veterans, active-duty military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and their families.
Organizers say Paddle for Heroes has grown significantly since its inception, becoming both a physical challenge and a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and service.
For Christopher and Hines, the journey represents an opportunity to honor fellow first responders while drawing attention to the importance of supporting those who dedicate their lives to public service.
Throughout the six-day trip, paddlers will travel Ohio waterways before finishing in Marietta, one of Ohio’s oldest communities situated at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers.
Supporters say the event serves as a reminder that the impact of military service and emergency response extends far beyond the individuals who wear the uniform, affecting entire families and communities.
The Paddle for Heroes organization continues to promote awareness, remembrance, and support for veterans and first responders through annual events and community outreach efforts across Ohio.
Community members are encouraged to follow the participants’ progress throughout the week and show support for the firefighters representing Mount Vernon during the statewide event.
