Mayor Matt Starr gives updates on the City of Mount Vernon

Monday Night Mount Vernon City Council met and LeNan Hager had her first meeting representing the 4th Ward after the resignation of Mike Miller. Hager will be on the Parks and Recreation Committee and be on the committee for Foundation Park Conservancy. She will also be part of the Shade Tree and Beautification Commission.

Mayor Starr says the Comprehensive Plan was approved and next it will go to the Knox County Commissioners for their approval of the plan. Starr says there is a City Growth Plan in the Comprehensive Plan. He says the Comprehensive Plan gives a game plan for the future. He said this plan will set the tone for the next 5-7 years.

Recreation Update: Jeff Derr, the Recreation Director for the City spoke at Council. Starr says you can now get your waterpark information on the City’s website. Hiawatha Water Park season will run from May 24th to August 23rd. Mailers are going out. The pavilions are being rented out and it’s generated about 1,500 dollars.

Legislation: Made adjustments of appropriations. The City got permission to enter into contract with Gray Matter for upgrades to utilities. The City is moving from paper and pen recordkeeping to digital and cloud based recordkeeping which makes it much easier for the City. The City also donated a 2000 Fire Truck and 2 retired fire hydrants to the Knox Technical Center. Also reappropriated GOVdeals revenues to the Police Department.

Saturday is the Tire Recycling Day at the Fairgrounds 8am-12pm or until the trailers are filled. This is for Knox County Residents and it’s $10 per load which is 5 tires.

Fairgrounds Road is under construction as a waterline is being put in. The waterline will connect from Wooster Road to Old Mansfield Road. It will give two sources of water to that neighborhood of Campus Point. The county is working on the stormwater issue. The hope is the project will be completed in two months. None of the pavement will happen until after the Fair.

Captain Hunter’s Pirate Ship has arrived for the Splash Pad. The roof is on the building the concrete is poured and the City is track to have the Splash Pad to be completed by May. May 20th will be the ribbon cutting.

Traffic signals have been upgraded on Coshocton Avenue. The current system has been replaced with radar detection and it’s much more accurate according to Starr. Next the City will be connecting radio technology will be added so that all the lights will communicate with each other. Starr says this will be a lot better for cross traffic. Starr says the longest wait time will be 90 seconds if you’re the first person in the intersection at the cross.
