The Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon recently recognized six exceptional student musicians from across Knox County during its 16th Annual John Philip Sousa Awards Luncheon.
Held on May 11, the event celebrated high school band students who demonstrated outstanding musicianship, leadership, dependability, and loyalty throughout their school careers. The John Philip Sousa Award is widely regarded as the highest honor a high school band student can receive.
Named after legendary American composer and band leader John Philip Sousa, the award honors students who embody the values Sousa championed throughout his life, including dedication to music education and excellence in performance.
Each recipient was introduced by their respective band director before receiving a commemorative trophy and certificate. Family members and school representatives were also recognized during the ceremony.
This year’s recipients included:
- Allison Wihelm – Centerburg High School
- Ethan Swendal – Danville High School
- Hunter Calbert – East Knox High School
- Sala Glandon – Mount Vernon High School
- Elizabeth Dudgeon – Knox County Career Center
- Caleb Smith – Fredericktown High School
Kiwanis Club members said the annual program continues to highlight the importance of music education while recognizing students who have demonstrated excellence both on and off the stage.
John Philip Sousa remains one of the most influential figures in American music history. Known as “The March King,” Sousa was a strong advocate for school music programs and believed music education played an important role in developing leadership, discipline, and character among young people.
The Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon is part of Kiwanis International, a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.
Club members say honoring student achievement through programs like the John Philip Sousa Awards remains an important part of their mission to support youth throughout Knox County.
