WMVO Good Times Great Oldies
Movie lovers are invited to celebrate both Ohio’s film history and one of Mount Vernon’s most famous native sons during a special outdoor screening of Bye Bye Birdie later this month at Ariel-Foundation Park.
The event is part of Ohio Goes to the Movies, a 250-day statewide celebration showcasing films with connections to Ohio in each of the state’s 88 counties. The initiative highlights Ohio’s contributions to the motion picture industry while encouraging communities to celebrate their own cinematic ties.
In Knox County, that connection is Paul Lynde, the beloved actor, comedian and television personality who was born in Mount Vernon. Lynde appeared in the 1963 film adaptation of Bye Bye Birdie, one of the defining roles of his career before becoming a household name through appearances on Hollywood Squares, Bewitched and numerous television variety shows.
The free screening will take place Saturday, July 26, beginning at 4 p.m. at the Schnormeier Event Center inside Ariel-Foundation Park. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for an afternoon of outdoor entertainment.
The event offers more than just a movie. It also celebrates Mount Vernon’s connection to one of television and film’s most recognizable comedic performers while joining communities across Ohio in recognizing the state’s influence on the entertainment industry.
Bye Bye Birdie follows the story of rock-and-roll sensation Conrad Birdie as he prepares for military service, creating chaos for his manager, fans and a small American town. The musical became a Broadway hit before being adapted into the Academy Award-nominated film.
Organizers say the Ohio Goes to the Movies initiative is designed to encourage residents to explore Ohio’s rich filmmaking history while bringing communities together through free public screenings and local events.
The screening is free and open to the public. Attendees should arrive early to find seating and are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and refreshments for the outdoor event.
