The Mount Vernon Shade Tree and Beautification Commission met on March 31 to review spring maintenance needs, tree‑planting progress, and preparations for several upcoming construction projects.
Members received an update on the TCP planting program, where crews have been working through neighborhoods to finish remaining sites. Brian Wade has been planting trees across multiple areas, coordinating mapping, and following up on locations. Staff also reported continued outreach to property owners on the city’s west end to finalize additional planting spots.
Invasive species management made up a significant portion of the discussion. The city removed 70 invasive pear trees last year and has identified another neighborhood with 57 more slated for removal and replacement with native species. Commissioners also noted that the annual bat‑exclusion window is now in effect, limiting tree removals along riparian corridors until fall.
Additional updates included invasive understory clearing at the Meadows, where three dead or decaying trees will require separate authorization for removal. The commission also reviewed sidewalk and curb repairs on East Gambier Street connected to a memorial tree request, which will move forward once quotes are finalized.
The city announced it will receive its 33rd Tree City USA designation and its 12th Growth Award at the regional ceremony in May.
Other updates included preparations for watering crews, ongoing Bee City pollinator and native‑planting efforts, and coordination with America 250 organizers on commemorative tree plantings and plaques.
The commission will continue reviewing spring projects as the season progresses.
